Why Should I Purchase Student Health Insurance

Young adults ages 19-29 comprise a large share of the uninsured or underinsured population which is now projected to exceed 42 million Americans.  There are approximately 14 million college students in the U.S. attending 4,182 colleges and universities across the nation.  It is estimated that as much as 30% of these students do not have health insurance.

As health care costs continue to rise at an ever alarming rate, the burden of costly medical expenses could jeopardize a student's future.  Student health insurance is a relatively low cost alternative and offers peace of mind for that unexpected injury.

Here are a few more reasons to purchase Student Health Insurance.

  • If the family is insured under an HMO or PPO Plan, coverage may not be portable.  Often times these policies may not extend primary care treatment while a family member is away from home.  This means that you may be required to pay for medical treatment out of pocket.
  • Family coverage through employers often includes an Age-Off Provision.  This means that once a dependent family member becomes of age under the policy definition this member becomes excluded from coverage under the parents' policy.
  • Not all policies pay 100% of medical costs; the purchase of student health insurance can fill in the gaps, limiting out of pocket expenses for costly medical treatment.
  • Not everyone can afford expensive individual health insurance.  Student health insurance is offered as a low cost alternative, and students enjoy the purchasing power of a large group.
